House Democrats Vote to Raise Debt Limit...Again

(MONTGOMERY, AL) –   In what has become a familiar story, Congressional Democrats voted today to raise the debt limit to $14.3 trillion, a $1.9 trillion increase. This increase will allow the government to keep borrowing into next year, without having to raise the limit again closer to the November elections.

The bill passed on a 217-212 vote, with no Republicans supporting the measure. This is the second time in three months that Congress has voted to increase the debt limit.

“This ‘need’ to raise the debt ceiling is caused by one thing: out-of-control spending in Washington.  Congress must do what every hard-working family is doing in this economy-- tighten their belts and cut expenses,” said Martha Roby, Republican candidate for Alabama’s Second Congressional District. “Instead of seeking to raise the debt limit, Congress should be looking to eliminate spending. My experiences on the Montgomery City Council taught me that cutting spending is never easy.  However, as an elected steward of taxpayer money, it is my duty to see that we live within our means and that taxpayers’ money is spent wisely and efficiently.  That is why, during the last budgeting cycle, I supported a budget that cut $9 million, while placing $3 million into the city’s depleted rainy day fund.”

“I pledge to fight against the reckless tax, spend, and borrow mindset in Washington, just as I have in Montgomery.  It is time for Congress to stop placing the burden of their poor fiscal decisions on us, our children, and our grandchildren,” Roby said.
