Martha Roby Addresses Montgomery RepublicansFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Contact: Tim BakerTuesday, August 18, 2009 (770) 519-6375 tim@capitolstrategy.us (MONTGOMERY, AL) – Republican 2nd District Congressional candidate Martha Roby spoke to the Montgomery County Republican Club last night in her quest to become the next Congressman for the 2nd Congressional District. “I’m running for Congress because I am appalled at the Democrat Congressional leadership in Washington,” said Roby. “We are spending too much money. The federal government is taking over private banks and car companies. They’re raising taxes and we now face the threat of a government-run health care system. We are being led by people who don’t share our fundamental values.” The Montgomery native’s speech was well received in her hometown and she answered a range of questions from club members, including reforming America’s health care system. “I do not support a government takeover of our health care system,” said Roby. “I want to improve health care, but instead of racking up trillions of dollars in additional debt, cutting Medicare and forcing people into a government-run system with faceless bureaucrats making decision regarding our well-being, Congress should be looking at making health care more accessible, portable and affordable through free-market reforms.” Roby said allowing Americans to purchase health care plans across state lines and providing the same tax credits that businesses receive for providing health care to those Americans who purchase health insurance on their own is a step in the right direction. “There is a better way. A way that relies on the free-market, not more government and higher taxes.” said Roby. Roby pledged to remain accessible, which has been a trademark of hers during the six plus years she has served on the Montgomery City Council. “We can get the country back on track. This is a conservative district. Alabama is a conservative state and our conservative values need a voice in Washington. If you send me to Congress, I will vote for our values every single time, not just on the easy votes. I won’t just vote for you, I’ll work for you in Washington together with my colleagues and other members to move our conservative vision forward.” Roby, who is serving in her second term on the Montgomery City Council, announced in May that she would seek the 2nd Congressional District seat. Last month, she reported over $125,000 raised in just 43 days and is one of the top Republican candidates in the nation. The Washington Post ranks this race as one of the ones most likely to be won by a Republican. *** Roby, a native of Montgomery was elected to the City Council in 2003, defeating five other candidates to win the election without a runoff. Because of her ability to work with others and reach out to every community in her district, she was overwhelmingly re-elected in 2007 with more than 82% of the vote. She has routinely opposed tax increases, fought hard in 2008 alone to against five proposed tax increases and offered solutions to reduce government spending. Roby led the efforts for the Montgomery City Council to adopt an ordinance to comply with federal law and prohibit businesses from harboring illegal aliens. Roby obtained a Bachelor of Music degree from New York University in 1998 and her law degree from Cumberland School of Law at Samford University in 2001. Prior to her election to the Montgomery City Council, she practiced law at Copeland, Franco, Screws & Gill, P.A. and remains a member in good standing with the Alabama and Mississippi bar associations. Martha is married to Riley Roby and they have two children. The Robys are members of Trinity Presbyterian Church, where they are involved in various ministries Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District is comprised of sixteen central and southeastern Alabama counties including all of Autauga, Barbour, Bullock, Butler, Coffee, Conecuh, Covington, Crenshaw, Dale, Elmore, Geneva, Henry, Houston, Lowndes and Pike Counties and portions of Montgomery County. ### Martha Roby for Congress P.O.
