(ENTERPRISE, AL) – Republican 2nd District Congressional candidate Martha Roby took her campaign for Congress to Coffee County today where she spoke to the Coffee County Republican Committee.

“I’m running for Congress because I am appalled at the Democrat Congressional leadership in Washington,” said Roby.  “We are spending too much money.  The federal government is taking over private banks and car companies.  They’re raising taxes and we now face the threat of government-run health care system.  We are being led by people who don’t share our fundamental values.”

“I want to see the economy moving again.  I want to help businesses create jobs.  I want improvements in our private health care system and find alternative energy sources, but there is just a better way to do it - a way that relies on the free market, not more government and higher taxes; a way that grows the private sector, not the government.”

“We can get the country back on track.  This is a conservative district.  Alabama is a conservative state and our conservative values need a voice in Washington.  If you send me to Congress, I will vote for our values every single time, not just on the easy votes.  I won’t just vote for you, I’ll work for you in Washington together with my colleagues and other members to move our conservative vision forward.”

Roby, who is serving in her second term on the Montgomery City Council, announced in May that she would seek the 2nd Congressional District seat.  Last month, she reported over $125,000 raised in just 43 days and is one of the top Republican candidates in the nation.  The Washington Post ranks this race as one of the ones most likely to be won by a Republican.

Roby is the only Republican candidate in the race.

Roby, a native of Montgomery was elected to the City Council in 2003, defeating five other candidates to win the election without a runoff.  Because of her ability to work with others and reach out to every community in her district, she was overwhelmingly re-elected in 2007 with more than 82% of the vote.  She has routinely opposed tax increases, fought hard in 2008 alone to against five proposed tax increases and offered solutions to reduce government spending. Roby led the efforts for the Montgomery City Council to adopt an ordinance to comply with federal law and prohibit businesses from harboring illegal aliens.

Roby obtained a Bachelor of Music degree from New York University in 1998 and her law degree from Cumberland School of Law at Samford University in 2001. Prior to her election to the Montgomery City Council, she practiced law at Copeland, Franco, Screws & Gill, P.A. and remains a member in good standing with the Alabama and Mississippi bar associations.   Martha is married to Riley Roby and they have two children.  The Robys are members of Trinity Presbyterian Church, where they are involved in various ministries

Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District is comprised of sixteen central and southeastern Alabama counties including all of Autauga, Barbour, Bullock, Butler, Coffee, Conecuh, Covington, Crenshaw, Dale, Elmore, Geneva, Henry, Houston, Lowndes and Pike Counties and portions of Montgomery County.
