Martha Roby Highlights Record, Offers Solutions at Medical Society Candidate Forum

(MONTGOMERY, AL) – Monday evening, the Medical Society of Montgomery County hosted a candidate forum focusing on health care at the Wynlakes Country Club Ballroom.  Martha Roby, Republican candidate for Alabama’s Second Congressional District, and two others vying for the Republican nomination participated in the event.  Roby’s remarks focused on the debate over the current health care legislation, problems that exist in our health care system, and positive solutions to reforming health care.

“We all agree that this legislation is flawed and must be repealed, but we must also focus on offering real solutions to the problems that health care is facing,” Roby said.  “I believe this sets me apart in this race, and I believe this approach will make me an effective member of Congress.”

“This issue of health care reform, including the flawed legislation that the Democrats have made law, affects all Americans, but it affects physicians most directly,” Roby said.  “This legislation places unfunded mandates on them as small business owners and as health care providers, and places an unbearable tax burden on them as individuals and as patients.”

The audience of approximately 50 doctors interrupted Roby’s remarks several times with applause, most notably in response to her record on the Montgomery City Council.  In 2008, Roby stood as the only opponent to a tax increase on business licenses.  However, knowing that the legislation would likely pass, Roby worked with the city’s medical community and fought to pass an amendment that included a credit for physicians that provide indigent care.

“I appreciate the support and encouragement of the medical community in Montgomery,” said Roby.  “During my time on the city council, I have worked tirelessly to fight against tax increases that negatively impact our local businesses’ ability to create jobs and improve our local economy.  Doctors’ offices are just one of the many types of businesses that call Montgomery home.  I am proud to represent these physicians and businessmen and women on the city council, and I look forward to representing them in Washington.”
