Martha Roby on Bobby Bright’s Pelosi Comments

(MONTGOMERY, AL) – Martha Roby, Republican nominee for Alabama’s Second Congressional District, issued the following statement on Bobby Bright’s comment yesterday to the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce, where he suggested Speaker Nancy Pelosi “might get sick and die” when asked if he would vote again for her as Speaker:

“Bobby Bright’s statement yesterday was an undisciplined comment at a time when America needs a disciplined approach to get our economy back on track, stop runaway Washington spending, and remain focused on creating jobs.”

“Clearly Bobby Bright will say anything and do anything to get out from under the tanking popularity of Nancy Pelosi and her job-killing agenda. This is only the latest example of ducking and weaving from someone who called his support for Speaker Pelosi a “no brainer,” and has supported her agenda 70% of the time. We need not speculate on the Speaker’s health and well being when we can take the future into our own hands in November. There’s only one way we can put an end to the Pelosi agenda, and that’s by changing the party running Congress, starting right here in Alabama’s Second District. ”

Background

While answering a question about his support for Nancy Pelosi, Bright suggested she “might get sick and die:”
“Blue Dog Dem Bobby Bright of Alabama has raised this to a new level, joking to constituents that Pelosi ‘might get sick and die’ before he has to support her again for Speaker, a local reporter tells me… ‘He had been asked a question from the audience about his support for Pelosi,’ Woodruff told me. ‘He said, ‘Let's wait until that comes up. He listed a long list of reasons why Pelosi might not run for Speaker of the House. The last one was, ‘heck, she might even get sick and die,’’ Woodruff told me.” (Reporter: Blue Dog Dem joked that Pelosi "might get sick and die"

Bright’s comments belie the fact that earlier he called his vote for Nancy Pelosi a “no brainer:”
“Bright, the former mayor of Montgomery, said the vote was a ‘no-brainer.’ Democratic leadership, including Pelosi, helped support his congressional campaign, he said.” (“Bright learning ropes in Washington,” The Dothan Eagle, by Amy Dominello, January 10, 2009, http://www2.dothaneagle.com/news/2009/jan/10/bright_learning_ropes_in_washington-ar-197534/)

According to the Washington Post Bright has voted with Nancy Pelosi and the Democrat leadership over 70% of the time: http://projects.washingtonpost.com/congress/members/b001264/
