(MONTGOMERY, AL) – Today Martha Roby released the second of four conservative priorities in her Roadmap for Alabama, detailing her plan to restore fiscal discipline to Washington.
The Roadmap for Alabama consists of four conservative priorities the campaign will release over the next two weeks. The plan lays out Roby’s vision for conservative change in Washington that will make our economy, military, and families stronger.
“Our government is spending money it doesn’t have and leaving an enormous debt to our children and grandchildren,” said Martha Roby, Republican candidate for Alabama’s Second Congressional District. “It is simply immoral to pass the buck on to future generations because politicians in Washington can’t break their addiction to spending.”
“I know what it means to balance a budget and reduce spending,” said Roby. “I’ve fought against wasteful spending and higher taxes on the City Council and have a proven conservative record. It’s going to take people with that experience to fix Washington.”
Among the solutions Roby proposes are passing a Balanced Budget Amendment, instituting a line-item veto, ending government bailouts of private companies, and creating budgets for entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare.
Earlier this week the campaign released the first priority of Martha Roby’s Roadmap for Alabama: “Unleash American ingenuity to grow the economy, create jobs, and get our country back on track.”

Priority Two: A Smaller, Leaner, More Limited, Government
Because of Washington’s addiction to spending, America is careening on a path toward an unsustainable future. The government is borrowing and spending money it does not have, leaving an enormous debt to our children and our children’s children. Today, each American’s share of the national debt is nearly $42,000 and growing. It is simply wrong for Congress pass the buck onto future generations because they are unwilling to get their fiscal house in order. Both Democrats and Republicans are to blame for this mess, but it’s our responsibility to fix it. Just like families across the country are tightening their belts to make ends meet, the federal government must do the same.
There’s a better way to make government smaller, leaner and more efficient:
A Record of Conservative Solutions
Martha Roby has walked the walk on cutting wasteful spending. On the Montgomery City Council, Martha fought against bloated budgets and offered solutions to reduce spending. In 2009, facing a budget shortfall and a rainy day fund that had been drained, Martha fought for a balanced budget that cut spending by $9 million and put $3 million back in the reserve fund, all without raising a single tax. Martha has fought to make city government more responsive and more efficient, eliminating duplication and waste. Martha will bring the same common sense, conservative philosophy that has guided her on the City Council to Washington.
Action Plan for the Future
In Congress, Martha will fight to rein in wasteful spending, increase efficiency, and scale back the role of the federal government. She will work with other conservatives to:
