Martha Roby Releases Third Priority in Roadmap for Alabama

(MONTGOMERY, AL) – Today Martha Roby released the third of four conservative priorities in her Roadmap for Alabama, detailing her plan to restore accountability and increase transparency in Washington.

The Roadmap for Alabama consists of four conservative priorities the campaign will release over the next two weeks. The plan lays out Roby’s vision for conservative change in Washington that will make our economy, military, and families stronger.

“There’s a good reason people are fed up with politicians in Washington. Washington is broken,” said Martha Roby, Republican candidate for Alabama’s Second Congressional District. “It’s not just the out of control spending and expansion of government, but also the way the liberal leadership has crafted legislation behind closed doors, shut down debate, and rammed it through Congress. ”

“Congress works for us, not the other way around,” said Roby. “I’ll fight to restore accountability and transparency to Congress, so we can make it the ‘People’s House’ once again.”

Among the solutions Roby proposes are requiring that all legislation include an explanation of its Constitutionality, requiring that Members of Congress abide by the laws they pass, and making sure legislation is posted with ample time for the public to review it and given a fair and open hearing.

Previously the campaign released the first two priorities of Martha Roby’s Roadmap for Alabama: “Unleash American ingenuity to grow the economy, create jobs, and get our country back on track” and “A Smaller, Leaner, More Limited Government.”

Priority Three: Washington is Broken, Let’s Fix It

There’s a reason distrust of government is at an all time high. People are fed up with Congress and politicians in Washington because they see a government that is arrogant, bloated, and unresponsive. They see more of their hard-earned tax dollars go to Washington, but yet are seeing their representatives thumb their noses at their constituents. The liberal leadership has crafted major legislation behind closed doors, shut down debate, and rammed it through Congress. This just isn’t right. Congress works for the American people, not the other way around. We need to increase transparency and accountability so we can make it the “People’s House” once again.

There’s a better way to fix Washington:

  • Increase accountability
  • Increase transparency
  • Restore public trust

A Record of Conservative Solutions

On the Montgomery City Council, Martha has been a consistent voice for transparency and accountability in government. As a city councilor with her phone number in the phone bank, Martha knows what it means to be accessible and accountable to her constituents. Likewise, Congress must be more responsive and open in the way it does business.

Action Plan for the Future

In Congress Martha will work to make government more responsive, transparent, and accountable. It’s time we truly make it the people’s House once again:

  • Require that all legislation be posted for 72 hours so that the public – and Congress – can read the bill
  • Give important legislation a fair and open hearing, broadcast on C-SPAN and posted online
  • Require that Members of Congress abide by the same laws they pass
  • Require that every piece of legislation begins with an explanation of its Constitutionality
