Meet Martha

I am a conservative Republican and candidate for Congress in Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District. I'm a native of Montgomery, Alabama, where I serve on the Montgomery City Council representing Council District Seven, the most socially and economically diverse council district in Montgomery.

My first experience in public service came when I was elected to the City Council in 2003, defeating five other candidates to win the election without a runoff.  Because of my ability to work with others and reach out to every community in my district, I was overwhelmingly re-elected in 2007 with more than 82% of the vote.

During my tenure on the Montgomery City Council, I have routinely opposed tax increases, fighting hard in 2008 alone to vote against five proposed tax increases and offering solutions to reduce government spending. Chairing a committee on immigration, I led the efforts for the Montgomery City Council to adopt an ordinance to comply with federal law and prohibit businesses from harboring illegal aliens. My work has resulted in a local sales tax holiday and tougher measures in Alabama’s landlord-tenant laws.

I obtained a Bachelor of Music degree from New York University in 1998 and my law degree from Cumberland School of Law at Samford University in 2001. Prior to my entry into public service, I practiced law at Copeland, Franco, Screws & Gill, P.A. and remain a member in good standing with the Alabama and Mississippi bar associations.

I am an active member of the Board of Directors of Sav-A-Life Montgomery, the Cleveland Avenue YMCA, the Britton YMCA, the Montgomery Area Business Committee for the Arts and the Montgomery Weed and Seed Executive Board. I recently participated in the Southern Women Leadership Conference and also the National Security Forum at Maxwell Air Force Base.

I am married to Riley Roby and we have two children, Margaret and George. We are members of Trinity Presbyterian Church, where we are involved in various ministries.
