| Congress continues to prove that it does not have the discipline to resist opening the federal wallet, and, as a result, our nation is plagued by a nearly $2 trillion deficit. All Americans must live within their means, and it is now time that Congress does the same by prioritizing America’s needs and cutting back on the things we cannot afford. I know there is a better way when it comes to spending taxpayer dollars. During my tenure on the Montgomery City Council, I routinely opposed tax increases, voting alone in 2008 against five proposed tax increases, and offered solutions to reduce government spending. In 2009, with no rainy day fund and a budget shortfall, I supported a balanced-budget for the City of Montgomery, which reduced spending by $9 million and put $3 million away, all without raising a single tax. I support balanced-budgets and other solutions to ensure our nation doesn’t spend more than we take in. In Congress, I will use the same common sense, conservative philosophy that’s guided me on the Montgomery City Council by practicing disciplined and responsible spending of taxpayer dollars to ensure that our nation’s fiscal house is restored to order. |
