Statement by Martha Roby on Today’s Unemployment Numbers

(MONTGOMERY, AL) – Martha Roby, Republican candidate for the 2nd Congressional District, released the following statement regarding today’s news that unemployment reached a 26-year high:

“While many Americans struggle to pay their mortgages, keep their electricity on and put food on their families' tables, the Democrats in Congress and the Obama Administration are busy passing a $1 trillion dollar energy tax and are now attempting to force through a trillion dollar bill that raises taxes on small businesses and working families while at the same time making health care more expensive.

As the result, the unemployment rate is at a 26-year high of 10.2 percent.

The Democrats’ liberal agenda of raising taxes kills jobs and hurts working families in Alabama’s 2nd District, especially during the recession facing our country.

There is a better way.  While it is easy to point out the failed policies and liberal thinking that have gotten America off track, I am ready to go to Washington equipped with common-sense, conservative values that Alabama’s 2nd District expects from their Congressman.

I know that cutting taxes is the surest way to empower the private sector, thus creating jobs and putting America back to work.  Congress should repeal the unused portions of the stimulus and cut the payroll taxes in half for two years, abolish capitol gains and the death tax and reduce the corporate income tax.  We cannot reasonably continue to increase our nation's debt by continuing to fund a stimulus that has clearly failed.

In Congress, I will fight for lower taxes and less government and will practice disciplined and responsible spending of taxpayer dollars. That is the right way to return Americans to the workforce and to strengthen our economy.”
