Statement by Martha Roby Regarding House Democrats’ Health Care Bill(MONTGOMERY, AL) – Martha Roby, Republican candidate for the 2nd Congressional District, released the following statement after House Democrats introduced their version of a health care reform bill:“Don’t be fooled: the Democrats’ healthcare plan is not truly about reforming healthcare. It is about removing power and control from citizens and forcing them into a government-run system. According to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, Speaker Pelosi’s plan includes a “strong public option” and will cost nearly $900 billion over the next ten years. How do they plan to pay for this? By raising taxes on working Americans and cutting spending on Medicare. “The voters of the 2nd District want reform, but they want reform that creates a market of affordable, portable, and accessible choices, not a government monopoly that will drastically increase taxes and limit access to necessary medical procedures. “As a member of Congress, I will only support healthcare legislation that does the following: • Allows healthcare plans to be purchased across state lines; • Reforms the tax code to treat equally those who purchase individual health insurance plans and those who receive group coverage through an employer; • Places ownership of healthcare in the hands of individuals, so that coverage may be transferred from job to job and state to state; • Finds ways to provide coverage to those who are unable to afford insurance on their own by creating high-risk pools and Associated Health Plans • Reforms medical malpractice and liability procedures “America’s healthcare system, though imperfect, is the best in the world. Reforms are needed, but the reforms must not threaten the quality, accessibility, or affordability of healthcare. The Democrats’ plan will increase the size of our government, but will do nothing to improve the quality of our healthcare system.” |
