The Democrats’ Failed Economic Game Plan: More Spending, Fewer Jobs

(MONTGOMERY, AL) –   Yesterday morning President Obama doubled down on 21 months of failed economic policies and announced another $50 billion for nationwide infrastructure projects. White House officials stated that the $50 billion would serve as an initial investment, but they did not provide an estimate for the total cost of the six-year program.

This newest round of stimulus spending follows the $814 billion stimulus package passed by Congress in 2009 and the $26 billion kiss to public employee unions which passed in August of this year, neither of which have moved the dial on unemployment numbers. The initial stimulus was supposed to focus on “shovel ready” infrastructure projects, but only a small percentage of the $814 billion have gone to those projects.

“This newest round of stimulus spending comes at a time when we can least afford it,” said Martha Roby, Republican nominee for Alabama’s Second Congressional District.  “We are running a $1.4 trillion deficit and have a crushing debt of $13 trillion and growing. Apparently throwing money at the problem is the only play President Obama and the Democrats have in their playbook.”

“After nearly 21 months of failing to create jobs and get our economy back on track, President Obama and Speaker Pelosi continue to repeat the same mistakes. They don’t understand that their policies of tax, spend, and borrow do not create jobs or grow the economy,” said Roby.  “Business owners are afraid to hire new employees because of the economic uncertainty created by the Democrats’ track record of failed economic policies.”

When the first stimulus was passed, the Obama Administration promised unemployment would stay below 8%. Instead, millions have lost their jobs and the unemployment rate is stuck near double-digits. Just last week it was announced that the unemployment rate for August rose to 9.6%.

“We need new leadership in Washington,” Roby said.  “We need leaders who understand that the economy will recover and jobs will be created when the federal government stops spending money it doesn’t have on programs that do not work.  This is why I’m running for Congress – because we need representatives to offer these common-sense solutions.”

Congressman Bobby Bright (D-AL) has not publicly stated whether he supports President Obama’s newest stimulus program.
